Bates-Hendricks

Bates-Hendricks is a historic neighborhood located just south of downtown Indianapolis, bordered by key cultural and entertainment districts like Fountain Square and Old Southside. Originally named after early Indiana leaders Hervey Bates and Thomas Hendricks, the area has long-standing roots, with the Bates-Hendricks House recognized as a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. Though primarily residential, the neighborhood offers direct access to I-65 and I-70, and its location makes it easy to reach Lucas Oil Stadium, Bankers Life Fieldhouse, and the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.

The neighborhood has seen significant revitalization efforts in recent years, driven in part by local homeowners and the spotlight from HGTV’s Good Bones. These efforts have restored many historic homes and spurred economic activity, including the opening of Two Chicks District Co., a local business offering home goods and a café. While Bates-Hendricks doesn’t have a major commercial center, it’s home to small, beloved spots like Tex Mex Taqueria, Lincoln Lane Coffee Co., and Indy All Night. Local bars like The Vault Indy and Bowhaus Tap Bar add to the social scene.

Outdoor spaces are a key part of life in Bates-Hendricks. Residents enjoy close access to the Pleasant Run Greenway and Garfield Park, a 128-acre public space featuring a conservatory, performing arts center, sunken gardens, and more. Within the neighborhood itself, you’ll find smaller parks like Hendricks Park and Ringgold Park, as well as Indy’s first off-leash dog park through a community partnership.
